  Who is Doris Hall-James?

DORIS HALL-JAMES.jpg

Doris Hall-James was born in Philadelphia, PA. Doris always loved music. As a child ,singing, playing piano and acting out plays was her forte. During her school years and on weekends, her group performed at many Hy Lit Record Hops and Jerry Blavit events, becoming the standard act on weekends. She also performed at local area events in Philadelphia and surrounding areas in her teenage years.

After graduating from High School and during her college years, she opened a music studio at 13th and Juniper Streets in Philadelphia. She began managing and promoting vocal groups/bands and solo artists. When she needed musicians for her artists, she contracted Larry James of Fat Larry's Band for studio recordings.

The recording group "Slick" featuring Doris Hall James, Brandi Wells and Dahlia Smythe started out as the background vocalists for Fat Larry's Band.  In 1979 they went on their own and recorded the Slick Album. They hit the charts with "Space Base" reaching No. 16 in the UK Top 40, and "Sexy Cream" which is still a club favorite today.

The song Sexy Cream featuring Doris Hall-James on lead vocals, was banned on USA radio by the FCC because of its controversial lyrics, but it was placed in the movie Paris is Burning. The clubs in the USA made it a hit and opened the door for the group to tour London, France, and England.

Slick's second album, "Go for It" was released in 1980. The single "Sunrise", featuring Brandy Wells became a standard tune and is still being played on the radio today. Singing, writing, and performing with the group Slick and Fat Larry's Band, allowed Doris to expose her writing and singing abilities and publish her catalog of over 100 songs with BMI as a songwriter for WMOT in Philadelphia.
